Desi Dance Community

Building an inclusive and supportive community, one class at a time

We started the Desi Dance Community in 2022, with the intention of bringing together the different dance communities all over the Bay Area. We felt the need for more support for each other within the South Asian dance community. We strongly believe that we can all support each other's artistry while continuing to pursue our own individual goals as well. As Desi Dance Community, we host our own classes while acting as a common platform to share and promote other artists within the Bay Area.

Our goal is to be the string that ties together all the different desi artists across the bay and provide centralized access to dance classes to our community. We will continue working together to make the Bay Area a thriving hub for growth and creative expression among south Asian dancers. Our mission is to highlight, inspire, and engage South Asian dance artists in the Bay Area by bringing together a diverse range of dance educators to teach in our community.

Our goal is for our community to have accessible dance training in addition to creating a space for dance educators to share their artistry and knowledge. Our vision is for every person in our community to experience dance through the diverse lens of our instructors, with the hope that it may spark something that they may want to continue to explore further.

As of 2024, Desi Dance Community will exist as a project under Ishami Dance Company. This allows us to grow further as a community. We have a significant overlap in members, values, and goals and with this partnership, we are going to have access to resources which will allow us to create bigger events.

INT/ADV Choreo Workshop - Sangeetha “Sang” Santhebennur

Sun, Feb 2nd - 12:00 - 2:00pm

Location: 473 Jacklin Rd, Milpitas, CA

Cost: $30 per Class

Class begins with a full-body warmup that encompasses aspects of cardio, active stretching, yoga flow, and muscle activation through repeated contractions. Followed by a series of grooves that will serve as tools in the piece of choreography that will be introduced. The choreography that is then taught, is mainly a vessel to focus on the bigger idea of HOW you learn. With the grooves taught prior in mind, dancers will find support in what they've been prepared with and how that can serve as a guiding tool during the choreography portion of class. While also bringing attention to key processes that let dancers leave better learners in general. Choreography is geared towards intermediate-level dancers, and is a fusion of many different styles (predominantly rooted in the street-style world).

Sangeetha (Sang) is a first generation Indian-American professional performing artist and multichannel instructor based in NJ/NYC. She is a vessel utilizing the art of performance through mediums such as dance, music, singing, modeling, choreographing, instructing as a means of continuously re-defining self-expression. She’s performed the works of esteemed choreographers such as Keone & Mari Madrid, Vinh Nguyen, Selene Haro, Ishita Mili, Monica Kapoor and more. She’s had the pleasure of successfully leading rooms in various roles including choreographer (Franklin High School CTE Resident Guest Choreographer, New Jersey High School Dance Day Guest Instructor, weekly instructor at Movers Bodega, Queens), fitness instructor ([solidcore] coach), dance captain (Cirque du Soleil, HAIR), and campaign curator (BrownMill Company, St.Clair Beauty, AK Crochet). Other commercial credits include work with MAC Cosmetics, Apple, JVN, EOS, New York Times: Opinion, NYFW, various music videos; theater work at New Victory Theater, Asolo Repertory Theater and Stages St. Louis. She has toured with South Asian recording artist Raveena and Canadian-based circus company Cirque du Soleil’s: Twas The Night Before. She is an active company member of IMGE Dance Company, a genre-blurring NJ-based dance company that has led her to the stages of NRG Stadium, New Victory Theater, Lincoln Center, Alvin Ailey and more. Most recently, she’s joined the Jack Cole Jazz Dancers for a repertory production of The Club Act at the Mastercard Midnight Theater, led by Cam Loeser featuring choreography by Ramita Ravi & Angel Kaba. Sang is a versatile shapeshifter learning from every role, environment and space she’s able to occupy.
