Hafiza Jameela (She/Her)
Company Artist
Meet Hafiza, a dancer whose journey with movement began with yoga in high school, followed by karate in her 20s, and later as an Emerging performer at Mona Khan Company in her early 30s. Introduced to Indian contemporary by Amit Patel and Ishika Seth during her time there, she never looked back.
While lacking formal childhood dance training, Hafiza cherished early moments of self-expression, dancing Bollywood hook steps in her room. Once she gained the means, she invested in formal training, recognizing the value of building a strong foundation through consistent practice. The lockdown years provided ample time for reflection, leading Hafiza to explore an array of dance styles. Now, with a product management background and as the proud owner of a barre studio, Hafiza has made movement a central part of her life. She believes in the power of natural movement, refined through dedicated practice.
Hafiza is also a dedicated barre instructor, valuing a well-rounded approach to dance and cross-training. She believes in the beauty of embracing multiple styles and keeping an open mind for continuous learning. She is a proponent of nuanced dancing, valuing deep learning and authentic expression. For her, dance is a way to explore and understand a culture, much like experiencing its cuisine. Her love for Raqs Sharqi and oriental styles is rooted in their soulful movements, community building, and the rich cultural tapestries they represent. She's discovered a newfound passion for semi-classical/Kathak-based dancing, appreciating the depth of expression it offers.
